Blister packing, often known as
blister packs, is a type of pre-formed packaging material that consists of a
thermoformed plastic cavity and a malleable top. The substance is packed in
deep-drawn pockets or cavities resembling blisters in this style of packaging.
A heat seal connects the two structures by mating the backing material, or
lidding, to the flat area of the plastic chamber enclosing the product inside.
Depending on the application, there are numerous forms of blister packaging.
Blister packs are most commonly used to package pharmaceutical items such as
pills, tablets, capsules, and lozenges. They are also utilised for packaging
consumer goods such as meals, gadgets, toys, and tools due to their inexpensive
cost, cheap raw ingredients, and rapid operating speed. The advantages of
employing blister packing are listed below.
The first significant application
of Blister
Packaging was in the packaging of birth control tablets. Blister
packing is a low-cost and easy method of storing individual dosages of a
medicine. Additionally, the package can be labelled to aid in administration.
Individual packaging helps to preserve the quality of the contents by
containing them in separate cavities or pockets. Any damage to the wrapping
material will not impact the entire package. The sensitivity of the product to
moisture, oxygen, and light is used to build forming films and lidding
structures. The packaging components can be laminated with barriers that
prevent external elements from penetrating. Light is blocked by opaque
materials such as aluminium, preventing product damage due to UV radiation.
When blister
packaging are opened, they cannot be returned to their original state.
Because it is impossible to separate the lidding from the blister card without
inflicting obvious damage, blister packaging has an inbuilt tamper-evident
feature. This discourages package theft not only in pharmaceuticals but also in
consumer goods such as electronics.
