Packaging in the pharmaceutical industry varies from drug to drug, however there are usually three layers of packaging: primary, secondary, and tertiary packaging.

1. The primary packaging system is the material that envelops and holds the product, such as ampoules and vials, prefilled syringes, IV containers, blister packs, and other package components and subcomponents that come into direct contact with the product or may have a direct effect on the product shelf-life.

2. A secondary packaging system is used to bundle primary packages together outside of the primary packaging, such as cartons, boxes, shipping containers, injection trays, and so on.

3. For bulk handling and shipment, tertiary packaging systems such as barrels, containers, and edge protectors are used.
