What Is Vodka Made From?

Vodka is a popular beverage that will continue to be so in
the coming years. Vodka has a 'unisex appeal,' as both men and women enjoy it.
Vodka mixed drinks are the most popular drinks ordered in cafés, clubs, and
discotheques, aside from beer. Every year, 4.5 billion litres of Vodka are
consumed around the world. This accounts for one-fifth of overall spirits
consumption. And the expansion isn't over yet. New brands and varieties continue
to appear on the market.
Vodka is a large and diverse category of liquor, and unlike
other spirits, it is not governed by any set of rules. Vodka is a Russian
alcohol that is generally referred to as a "neutral grain spirit"
because it is made by fermenting and distilling grain. This could be maize,
rye, wheat, or any other grain the distiller prefers. Potato vodka has long
been a popular beverage in Poland and other potato-growing regions such as
Idaho and Scandinavia. However, vodka can be distilled from almost anything,
and you can find vodkas manufactured from beets and grapes.

Vodka is a rectified spirit, which means it has been
distilled three times or more. Some products have been distilled five or more
times. A vodka brand's claim that their vodka has been distilled X number of
times has become commonplace. The idea is that the more it is distilled, the
cleaner and smoother it becomes. In general, this is correct. The
"heads" and "tails" of vodka are frequently removed as it
passes through the still. These are the components of a finished batch's
distillate that are located on the top and bottom. The vodka becomes cleaner
and has fewer contaminants when only the "heart" of the distillation
is used.
After distillation, vodka is filtered, most commonly using
charcoal. Vodka does not require maturing and is ready to drink immediately.
From still strength to bottling proof, which is typically 40% alcohol by
volume, it is cut with water (ABV, 80 proof). 100-proof vodka and higher are
available, however they are less popular.
The neutral flavour of vodka is also due to one very
essential factor: water. Many brands may boast about making smooth vodka with
mountain spring water or some other ultra-clean source. This is an essential
component of the distillation and bottling process that cannot be overlooked.
