Your immune system is made up of organs and cells that work
together to defend your body against bacteria, parasites, viruses, and cancer
cells. An autoimmune disease occurs when your immune system mistakenly attacks
your body rather than protecting it. Why your immune system does this is
unknown. A total of approximately 100 autoimmune illnesses have been
identified. Lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn's disease, and ulcerative
colitis are some of the most common.

Autoimmune illnesses can affect a wide range of tissues and
organs in the body. They can produce a wide range of symptoms, including
discomfort, exhaustion, rashes, nausea, migraines, disorientation, and more.
Symptoms vary depending on the type of sickness.
Doctors aren't sure what causes the immune system to
malfunction. However, some people are at a higher risk of developing an
autoimmune disease than others. According to a 2014 study, women are more
likely than males to have autoimmune illnesses – 6.4 percent of women vs. 2.7
percent of men. Often, the condition develops during a woman's reproductive
years (ages 15 to 44). Certain ethnic groups are more likely to develop
autoimmune disorders. Lupus, for example, affects African-Americans and
Hispanics at higher rates than Caucasians. Multiple sclerosis and lupus, for
example, are autoimmune disorders that run in families. Although not every
family member will develop the same disease, they will all inherit a proclivity
for autoimmune diseases. Because autoimmune illnesses are becoming more common,
researchers believe that environmental factors such as infections and exposure
to chemicals or solvents may play a role.
