Follow the
directions on the product container or your doctor's instructions. Take no more
than the suggested amount. Inquire with your doctor or pharmacist if you have
any concerns. On an empty stomach, iron is best absorbed (usually if taken 1
hour before or 2 hours after meals). If you have stomach discomfort, take this
medication with food. For liquid drops for infants and children, see the
directions below. Antacids, dairy products, tea, or coffee should not be
consumed within 2 hours of taking this drug since they will reduce its
effectiveness. Unless otherwise advised by your doctor, take tablets or
capsules with a full glass of water (8 ounces or 240 millilitres).
After taking
your pill or capsule dose, do not lie down for at least 10 minutes.
Extended-release pills should be swallowed whole. Extended-release capsules and
tablets should not be crushed or chewed. This can cause the entire medicine to
be released at once, increasing the chance of unwanted effects. Also, unless
your doctor or pharmacist directs you to, do not divide extended-release
tablets unless they have a score line. Without crushing or chewing, swallow the
whole or split tablet.
According to

If you're
taking a chewable tablet, chew it well before swallowing.
If you're
taking this medication as a liquid suspension, give it a good shake before each
dose.
If you're
taking the liquid form for adults, use a special measuring device/spoon to
accurately measure the dose. If you use a regular spoon, you could not get the
right dose. To avoid tooth discoloration, dissolve the dose in a glass of water
or juice and sip with a straw.
Use the
dropper provided to properly measure the dose if you're delivering liquid drops
to a newborn or child. To increase your child's acceptance, the dose can be
placed directly into the mouth (towards the rear of the tongue) or mixed in
formula (not milk), fruit juice, cereal, or other food as instructed. It is best
to give this medication right after a meal. Follow the directions on the product
package for the brand that you use.
