The way a specific head and neck cancer behaves is determined by the spot where it develops (the primary site). Cancers that start in the vocal cords, for example, behave substantially differently than cancers that start in the back of the tongue, which is only an inch or less away from the vocal cords.

Squamous cell carcinoma is the most frequent type of cancer in the head and neck, and it develops from the cells that line the inside of the nose, mouth, and throat. A history of smoking or exposure to the human papillomavirus is frequently linked to squamous cell carcinoma (HPV). Salivary gland tumours, lymphomas, and sarcomas are some of the less prevalent kinds of head and neck malignancies.

Cancer can spread in one of four ways. The first is a straight extension from the main site to the surrounding areas. The second is transmitted to lymph nodes via lymphatic pathways. The third is spread along nerves to other parts of the head and neck (perineural spread). The fourth is transported to distant parts of the body via blood vessels. The spread of head and neck cancer to the lymph nodes in the neck is rather common.

The lymph nodes that are most usually affected are determined by the original tumor's location. The majority of lymph nodes are found beneath the sternocleidomastoid muscle on each side of the neck, along important blood veins. If the cancer has advanced to the lymph nodes in the neck, the number of nodes involved, and their position in the neck, the risk of spreading to other areas of the body through the bloodstream is closely associated. If cancer is found in lymph nodes in the lower area of the neck rather than those in the upper, the risk is increased.

A dentist, oral surgeon, or physician may diagnose cancer of the head and neck if a patient detects signs such as a lump in the neck or an unhealed sore in the mouth. The diagnosis might be made during a normal examination even if there are no symptoms.
