Monoisopropanolamine; Used In Several Applications to Attain Basicity, Buffering, and Alkalinity Objectives

Monoisopropanolamine (MIPA), also known as isopropanolamine, is a chemical used in many applications serving as a stabilizer, an emulsifier, a neutralizer, and chemical intermediate that achieves buffering, basicity, and alkalinity objectives. MIPA is a colorless, clear liquid that is completely miscible with water, benzene, and alcohol. MIPA has the lowest molecular weight of the three standard isopropanolamines. Monoisopropanolamine is an organic compound that is used as a reactive agent, pH regulator, and acidic herbicide neutralizer.

The global monoisopropanolamine market size is expected to witness potential gains in the future and register a significant CAGR of 4.2% over the forecast period (2019 - 2027).

Monoisopropanolamine-based formulations exhibit better color stability, thermal stability, and better oil solubility compared to conventional ethanolamines. MIPA serves as good solubilizer of oil and fat, entails lower formulation costs, and offers heat and color stability. The demand for monoisopropanolamine is expected to increase, as it helps achieve buffering, basicity, and alkalinity objectives in various applications such as metalworking fluids, sulfonic acid-based surfactants, and fatty acid-based surfactants, among others.

MIPA can be prepared by the addition of aqueous ammonia to propylene oxide. It is corrosive to metals and tissue and is commonly used as an emulsifier, surfactant, stabilizer, and chemical building block. It can be used as a neutralizer, stabilizer, emulsifier, and chemical intermediate in pharmaceutical, personal care, water borne coatings, and metalworking products. Moreover, monoisopropanolamine is commonly used as an intermediate in organic synthesis of plastics, rubber chemicals, coating materials, pesticides, and pharmaceuticals, among others.

It is also used to manufacture dyestuffs, textile dyestuffs, pigments, polyethers or polyoles, and veterinarian agents and in water treatment. MIPA is widely used in the agriculture industry for the production of fungicides, and thus there is an increasing demand fin the United States. For example, in 2020, around 223.2 thousand pounds of the fungicide Mancozeb were applied to onion crops in the U.S. While, the fungicide chlorothalonil was used on 44% of the planted acres of onions in the United States.
