What is Fluoroelastomer? Difference between FPM and FKM

Fluorocarbon compounds, commonly known as fluoroelastomers, are employed in a wide range of high-performance applications. Fluoroelastomers are an important polymer because of their long-term durability and low environmental impact. These elastomers have been designed to withstand high temperatures – 204° C continuously and 300°C intermittently – as well as harsh chemical changes. Fluoroelastomers offer excellent compression properties, are resistant to sunshine and ozone, and have a low gas absorption rate.

According to the "Coherent Market Insights" Global Industry Insights, Trends, Outlook, and Opportunity Analysis of Fluoroelastomer Market.

Hexafluoropropylene (CF2=CFCF3), chlorotrifluoroethylene (CF2=CFCl), vinylidene fluoride (CH2=CF2), and tetrafluoroethylene (C2=F4) are copolymerized to produce fluoroelastomers. These elastomers, also known as fluorinated elastomers, offer good swelling resistance to oils, chlorinated solvents, oxygen, ozone, heat, and fuels. Due to their unique attributes such as heat resistance, sealing capability, and mechanical properties, fluoroelastomers are widely employed in the automotive sector. Fluoroelastomers can be used at temperatures ranging from –26°C to 205-230°C for short-duration procedures.

Due to increased features such as good chemical resistance and a wide operating temperature range, fluoroelastomers are employed for sealing applications in the chemical industry. Low-pressure applications, paint spray extraction, and extraction at mild temperatures all require fluoroelatomeric hoses. Fluoroelastomer seals reduce extractables, drop particles, and resist deterioration in severe plasma, all of which aid to prevent semiconductor process contamination. Fluoroelastomers are employed in a variety of applications, including semiconductor wafer production, oil and gas recovery, chemical processing, pharmaceuticals, and aerospace.

What exactly is the difference between FPM and FKM?

ISO's international designation is FPM, while ASTM's abbreviation is FKM. Both of these terms refer to the same type of rubber: fluoro rubber.

Some of the world's top chemical companies produce and commercialise fluoroelastomers, including Chemours – VitonTM, Dyneon Chemicals – Dyneon®, Solvay – Technoflon®, and Daikin – Dai-El.

J-Flex is a Chemours VitonTM Scheme official licensee; but, we understand that our customers want options, so we also supply various grades in what is likely Europe's largest stock variety of Fluoroelastomer Sheet Products.
